Despite our best laid plans for the future, unexpected events can occur that may leave us mentally incapacitated. Although no one wants to plan for such occurrences, health care directives, durable powers of attorney and living wills can act as insurance in case they do.

What Is A Health Care Surrogate?

A health care surrogate is someone who makes key medical decisions on your behalf in the event you become incapacitated. If you do not have one, the hospital or doctors will determine the identity of your closest family member(s) and obtain their consent instead. Instead of adding this burden to your family’s list of worries, prepare ahead of time with a health care directive.

If you are considering a health care surrogate, it is important that you choose someone who understands your wishes and will make appropriate decisions for you.

I am attorney Michael G. Horton and I can help. I am happy to offer guidance and advice regarding health care directives so as to make sure your wishes are carried out as you see fit.
